Welcome to Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy (HBHA), an award-winning independent Day School and Kansas City’s only Jewish Day School for children in grades K to 12. 

For over 50 years, we’ve nurtured a strong community of Jewish families from diverse backgrounds who value the same thing: an academically strong, joy-filled education that nurtures the whole child’s intellectual, social, and spiritual growth.

Our strong academic foundation is reinforced by our flexible Jewish Studies model that enables all students to engage in Jewish learning that respects how Judaism is practiced in a variety of homes to create an inclusive environment.

Whether they join us in Kindergarten, Grade 11, or anywhere in between, your child will benefit from a personalized education in a small, close-knit class, enriched by our shared traditions and rooted in the values of the Torah. The result: students who think critically, creatively, and independently so they may become proud, ethical leaders in their academic, professional, and Jewish communities.

With just 200 students enrolled and a 5:1 ratio of students to teachers, we offer the smallest class sizes of any school in the Kansas City area. This allows us to know each child as an individual and a learner, and provide a top-tier, values-based education so they can become their best selves.

Our community represents the full spectrum of our Jewish community, with a wide variety of backgrounds and home observances. One unique benefit of our program is Student Families, comprising one student from each grade who learn, grow, and celebrate together throughout their years at HBHA. Student Families gather every Friday for a Taste of Shabbat, and celebrate Jewish and secular holidays throughout the year, so we can enjoy time together while learning and engaging in Jewish life.

Our dual-language curriculum emphasizes curiosity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication through rigorous Jewish and general studies curricula. Students learn to value their Jewish heritage while engaging with meaningful lessons that prepare them for success in school and life.

In our Kindergarten, Jewish children of all backgrounds learn joyfully together in classrooms where they’re treated as individual, valued members of our community. Our low student-teacher ratios enable faculty to know each child as a person and a learner, so they may thrive academically through play and exploration in a values-based environment. 

HBHA offers a unique Lower School environment in which students are challenged academically within a warm, nurturing environment. Our low teacher-to-student ratios means each student is treated as a valued member of our close-knit community.

Middle School students are taught to be academically responsible and self-reliant within a nurturing environment. Students are supported in their individual self-discovery and development of responsibilities to the greater community (tzedakah, mitzvot, tikkun olam) during this time in their lives.

Upper School students receive individualized guidance, including college preparation, and benefit from strong academics, extracurriculars, and hands-on opportunities. Our program empowers students to discover their identities and develop confidence, while instilling Jewish ethics and leadership skills to help them advocate for themselves, be menschen and work in partnership with adults around them to achieve their goals.
